If you have been putting off a hearing aid conversation, there is a good chance the reason is not your hearing. It is the dread of being sold something.

I hear it often. People worry about the price, about being rushed, or about walking out with a device they did not really choose. Those worries are reasonable. Hearing aids are a real investment, and you deserve to make the decision on your own terms.

I’m Dr. Kelli, an audiologist, and I run South Jersey Hearing and Tinnitus myself. Here is how I think a hearing aid conversation should go.

Step One Is Understanding You, Not Selling You

Before any device comes up, we start with your hearing test and a conversation. Where do you struggle most? Restaurants, the TV, phone calls, family gatherings? What do you want back?

The test tells us how you hear. Your answers tell us what matters. Both shape any recommendation.

You May Not Need Hearing Aids Today

A good evaluation sometimes ends with “your hearing is healthy, let’s recheck in a year” or “this is mild, here is what to watch for.” You should leave knowing exactly where you stand, whether or not you buy anything.

Cost Questions Are Welcome

Cost is usually the biggest worry, so I would rather talk about it openly. We can go through your options, what your health insurance may cover (we accept most major carriers), and what fits your budget. You should never feel embarrassed to ask.

Choosing a Hearing Aid Is Personal

Hearing aids come in different styles, technology levels, and features. The right one depends on your hearing, your daily life, how comfortable it is to wear, and how much you want to fuss with it.

We talk it through together, and I explain the reasons behind any recommendation in plain language.

Fitting and Follow-Up Matter as Much as the Device

A hearing aid works best when it is programmed carefully and adjusted after you have lived with it. Your brain also needs time to get used to hearing sounds again. That is why follow-up visits are part of the process, not an afterthought.

Why a Small Practice Feels Different

At South Jersey Hearing and Tinnitus there is no sales quota and no rotation of staff. You see me at every visit. Appointments are unhurried, and we offer night and weekend hours so care can fit around work and family.
